A lady of breaking wind

Grateful Crane
Long long ago, there was a kindhearted lady in a village, who had one fault.
She couldn’t stand breaking wind, even if in front of people.
So she was giving up the hope of getting married to someone.
But one day, falling in love with her at first sight, a son of a millionaire came to her house to get the permission of her parents.
Her parents were beside themselves with joy and accepted his proposal.
So worried, her mother said to her on the previous day of her wedding.
“Listen to me carefully!
You must never, never break wind in front of not only your husband but also any people.
You must stand breaking wind whatever happens.
You’ll be driven out of your new house.
Do you understand?”
She only nodded in front of her mother.

She was such a kindhearted and hardworking lady that she was loved by her husband and her parents-in-law so much.
Though she succeeded in standing breaking wind for a few days, she at last broke wind loudly in front of her new family while eating dinner on the fifth day.
“Oh my God.” said her mother-in-law.
She was so ashamed of it that she ran away out of the house.
“I was told never to do so by my mother.
I can never come back to the house any more.”
She walked around in the village until she came to a waterfall in a mountain.
She stooped down and cried for a long time, and at last she jumped into it to lose her life.
Hearing her death, her husband came to the waterfall where she killed herself.
“I feel so sorry for you. I can’t live without you any longer. I’ll kill myself and go to you now.”
Her husband also jumped into it and lost his life.
Hearing his death, his parents came to the waterfall where they killed themselves.
“We feel so sorry for you. It was wrong for us to laugh at her.
We can’t live without our beloved son.
We’ll kill ourselves and go to you now.”
The millionaire and his wife also jumped into it and lost their lives.
Her parents also jumped into it and lost their lives.
His relatives and her relatives jumped one after another and lost their lives, too.
“We can’t live without the millionaire. Our lives are meaningless. We are going to die now.”
Hearing the death of the millionaire and his families and relatives, every one in the village rushed to the waterfall and jumped into it one after another and lost their lives.
Now there was nobody living in the village any more.

The end
