A dish house

Grateful Crane
Long long ago, there was a young lady working as a maid in the house of the feudal lord in a country.
The lord treasured ten china dishes.
One day she was accused of stealing one of them by his wife and given a severe whipping by him, though she declared that she had never done it.
Having no way to plead her innocence, she jumped into the well to death.
To tell the truth, the lord’s wife happened to break it and dropped the pieces down into the well.
A few days after her death, on a hot day in summer a ghost appeared every night above the well and began to count the number of dishes,
“One, two, three…..”. in a sad and suffering voice.
When she had counted up to ‘nine’, she burst into crying without saying ‘ten’ and disappeared into the well.
The strange happening took place every night and it became known to neighbors as a dish house.
The lord worried greatly over the matter and went to his friend to ask for some advice.
“This is because she can’t rest in peace. I’ll get rid of the ghost for ever.”
said his friend.

One night he hid himself near the well to wait for here to come out.
At last the ghost the young lady, in long hair, in white dress and lowering her hands, appeared and started to count,
“One, two, three…..”
Just after she finished ‘nine’, he cried ‘ten’.
At the moment the ghost vanished from the sight.
The ghost has never appeared after that.
