After returning from a business trip in Venezuela, I immediately hit the gate of Sophia University. I couldn’t forget the shock I received when I was spoken to by a Venezuelan doctor in Spanish. I was keenly aware that if I couldn’t speak the language of the area I was in charge of, I wouldn’t be able to do business. I asked the receptionist at Sophia University, “I want to study Spanish, what should I do?” Then, every spring and autumn, there is a three-month night course sponsored by the Spanish Center in Sophia University. Therefore, I decided to enter the beginner’s course in autumn immediately. It was easy to get in. All I had to do was submit the application and pay the three-month tuition fee. I was surprised when I went there on the first day. There were about 120 students. There were also a few 65-year-old students there. Looking at the whole, about 70% were female students. The teacher was Spanish and most of the lessons were in Spanish. The teacher nominated the students to speak one by one. If that person could not answer, the next person was easily nominated. Therefore, preparation and review were absolutely necessary. There was a test three months later, and if I didn’t pass it, I couldn’t move up to the upper class. Grammar and conversation were taught at the same time. The speed of teaching was so fast that the number of students, which was 120 at the start, was less than 30 three months later. The 65-year-old student didn’t seem to be able to keep up. But I found it wonderful to meet this 65 year old student. Since I went to work during the day, I couldn’t do enough preparation and review, so I decided to master the beginner’s class in two courses, autumn and spring. In the end, that was good. In the fall of the following year, I entered the intermediate course. Over the next year, I was able to go to the advanced course. Speaking of advanced courses, I was able to understand ordinary conversation and express my feelings. Also, I was able to read and write sentences normally. With the basics of English, my Spanish improved quickly. However, before graduating from the advanced course, I changed from being in charge of Latin America to North America.
